987, good to see you've been listening! There have been about 20 cases of actual voter fraud in the last 15 or so years, and most of the recent ones were Trump voters. Every so often someone will cast a vote for a debilitated family member. That's about it. Meanwhile, republicans just purge voters off rolls for having the same first and last (ethnic sounding) name, despite different middle initials, birth dates, SSNs, etc... So yep, republicans are cheaters, and democrats pretty much play by the rules (some shadiness in the primaries notwithstanding). No, George Soros and Barbara Streisand are not driving buses full of illegal immigrants (where/how would they even round these people up?) to polling places, and if they were, you can damn well believe you would be seeing EVERY news outlet screaming their heads off about it. But go ahead, post an ad on craigslist asking illegal immigrants to show up to get bused around to vote illegally.for democrats, I am sure you will get like at least 2 people. Hopefully your bus is pretty small. Just make sure if you want a scientific result that you put up another ad for people to illegally vote for republicans. -THP Team

Profit is what's left after everyone has been paid. So that $12k would indeed go straight to corporate as profits. Most retail operations (successful ones at least), the sales staff generate FAR more revenue per hour/day than they get paid in wages and benefits (if any). Like 10 times more. Think about it, a single cashier at a fast food place could easily ring up a few hundred dollars in transactions in a single hour. Maybe you have one more person making the food and maybe a 3rd doing whatever else is needed. So paying people a dollar or 2 more would barely make a difference. PLUS when you pay people more, you have less employee turnover, and you get better employees to start with. So your productivity goes up anyway (so maybe instead of $400 in revenue in an hour, you're hitting $500 or $600, etc...). This stuff is not rocket surgery, but it's what the Waltons, et al don't want you to understand about how the economy is up, because the current suppressed and stagnant wages are VERY good for them and make them billions of dollars a year, while hard working Americans suffer. -THP Team

Thanks for reminding us of this one. For those who don't know the full quote, here is part of it.
"Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.
The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo."
Now if only the Republicans could give up that illlusion of religion maybe they would leave their party and start addressing the REAL conditions that affect people instead of going after women, people who can get pregnant, trans people. Great quote Tamera.

If you think response to Harvey is some great example of "small government", I'd like to have the name of your pharmacist so I can refer him to my optometrist. Disaster response is EXACTLY the kind of thing that should be under the purview of the government. How many people do you think you need to band with to deal with and recover from BILLIONS of dollars worth damage? Government is just formalized mutual resource sharing for the benefit of all and the structures put in place to facilitate that. That's it. It's not some evil bogeyman unless we allow the reigns to be taken over by pernicious interests like the Koch brothers. Democracy has been perverted by things like Citizens United, Interstate Crosscheck, and more. That's not proof that democracy and government are inherently bad, it's just an indication that we need to be more involved individually and more vigilant. On the other hand, if we'd had a responsive government that had been adequately dealing with climate change the past 2 or 3 decades, Harvey may or may not have even happened and if it did would have likely been much less severe. Private citizens working alone couldn't do that, it just doesn't work that way. Government could. And as far as the "tyranny of the majority", sometimes you need to drag a few stragglers kicking and screaming into the present (see: marijuana legalization, marriage equality, etc...). -THP Team

Play nice, people! And Fourth Root, that makes no sense. If prices are limited, a vendor will either sell at the allowed level or not, but lose that market. Nobody is going to cut themselves off from an unsaturated market just because they can only make 10% profit and not 50% (100%, 500%, etc...). So guess what, that supply is still there, only now it's priced at a level people can afford, and it likely all gets sold. Victims get the resources they need affordably, and the vendors sell their entire inventories. Sounds like a win win for everyone. -THP Team

But if small companies only pay lousy wages, how will they attract good employees?
The myth about a living wage that it kills jobs is just that, a myth. Wages have been stagnating in this country for decades. At some point the pendulum has to swing the other way and it's got a long way to go before minimum wage goes too high (assuming gradual increases). What ACTUALLY happens is that as minimum wage goes up, so does consumer spending/aggregate demand which CREATES jobs. How many gallons of milk does a billionaire buy for his family each week? Probably the same one as someone making minimum wage. Billionaires eventually run out of crap to buy for themselves, while the poor never do, because there is always something they can spend on to improve their quality of life. So the billionaire has all this extra money that ends up in the Caymans, etc... because what else are they going to do with it?
So you raise minimum wage consistently, and institute more progressive taxes on the rich, and suddenly the velocity of money in the economy is really zipping along, which leads to growth and prosperity for EVERYBODY, not just a select few. The exact opposite of what your faux news overlords have sold you on.
Furthermore, when you say a fill in the blank doesn't deserve a living wage, what you are really saying is lets abolish the 40 hour work week. -THP Team
