I've never been able to keep a car older than 14 years because it gets too expensive and inconvenient taking it to the shop every few weeks." The older the car, the older the tech. The older the tech, the easier it is to fix it yourself. The real trick however, is to be able to spot things that are going to need repairing and do it prior to the break down. This is especially true with shocks, ball joints and steering parts. Unfortunately, even an old back yard mechanic like myself gets to a point when, you realize, it's time to take the thing to a mechanic with the equipment to get the job done.
