There were a hell of a lot of jokes about them when introduced to Northern Ireland. A lot of protesters used to moon the troops. That soon stopped. As Mike says the idea is to bounce them onto target. Ideally... the go up and in just below waist height! Instant Pacifist!

When introduced into Northern Ireland, the opposition soon learnt 'Don't turn your back to them'. The idea is actually to aim in front and bounce them onto the target, direct hit, they are lethal.

When the British Army introduced Baton Rounds in Northern Ireland, demonstrators soon learnt 'Don't moon The Army guys'! Incedentaly, correct practice is aim in front of the traget, and bounce it on to them. Direct hit they are lethal.
