No it wa sthe Naval 6lb QF guns that were used. Same idea though as the Maxim, defence against small fast Torpedo carring vessels. The Royal Navy ,through Churchill as First Sea Lord had a large influence on Land Ships.

That C96 dissapeared for years, then made a comeback in the 1972 film Young Winston, the makers claime dthey ha dfound the pistol and featured it in the film. My parents were from South Wales mining familes. My Farther spat evry time he herad Churchiull's name.

The Museum of Naval Firepower Portsmouth England is the place to go. Incedentally they also have a collection of Small Arms taken from the German High Seas fleet in 1918.

@warriorwolf77 It's a very eclectic collection. Portsmouth is a Bucket Stop for anyone intrested in Naval matters, there are on display, HMS Warrior, HMS Victory, the M33 Breast work Monitor, and the real jewel the Mary Rose. She is just shiveringly good on all levels. Around the area you have Fort Nelson which is the Royal Amouries Artillery collection. The RN Submarine Museum with the Holland 1 . In England we tend to spread things about. There are a pair of 15 inch guns outside the Imperail War Museum in the Middle of London, though what they have done to the inside- my blood pressure won't stand discussing. The National Army Musuem at Chelsea. Then small local musuems. I'm lucky in that Portsmouth is about an hour away, you tend to take things for granted till someone with an intrest like you asks.

@warriorwolf77 You'd get your value out of a visit. But as you say if it's a distance the whole area desrves a proper visit. Good thing is the place is well set up for tourism. You can go to the outskirts on the M27 straight off , park up for a day in a proper car park with return bus services to centre for you and 8 passengers, £9.

One hit one kill.

To bulky, to much ammo needed. They used 6lb QF Naval Guns instead. The Royal Navy had a lot of input in the first Land Ships.
2
They were demonstrated in Denmark. The King wanted them but his Chancellor said no, at the rate of fire and cost of ammunition it would bankrupt the country in half an hour. In WW2 there was a two pounder multi barreled version used on ships, though a lot of these older ones ended up on converted yachts and fishing vessels.

The recoil of that thing would make it feel like you were on a Rocking Horse. But then the required qualifiactaions of the Royal Navy Gun Running Teams was said to be Speed of a Racehorse, Strength of a Carthorse, and Brains of a Rocking Horse.

Yes if you get attacked by a house it stands no chance!

@sixstringedthing The WW2 guns in multi mounts were 2lb Vickers. Though the older guns like this got dragged back into service on converted yachts and fishing vessels.

@sixstringedthing Vickers at the time were amongst if not the biggest armenets producer in the world. They were mainly based at Dartford on the East edge of London, near where the Dartford Crossing is now they even had an airfeild.

@warriorwolf77 Sounds like a plan. You'd not regeret it.

First things first young whipper snapper! Rifles , pistoils and machine guns using small bore ammunition are reffered to as Small ARms. You will find in a lot of British and Empire reports the abreviation SAA- Small Arms Ammunition. Guns are crew served Artillery, Artillery never carry colours, the Guns are the Colours and treated as such, hence such a fus sif you loose one to the enemy. Guns fire from depression - Below horizontal to plus 25* Howitzers fire from 25* to 45* elevation. Above 45* they are Mortars. If you really want to impres sthe Teachers, read JRR Tolkien Lord of the Rings, and study his service in the Great War, it will make you look at the book in a whole new light. By the way try this site http://greatwar.nl/

@commissarblitz9480 Pleasure but be warned! Once you start researching- There is no known cure! :-)

The original idea was Naval, those pesky little small fast Torpedo boats. You need something handy with a high rate of fire to stop them. And to mount them a whole new classification of Warship! The Torpedo Boat Destroyer.

When your on the incoming side, rate of fire is a technical irrelevance, but in the case of Denmark, whose King wanted them with a passion, his Chancellor said No, at the rate of fire and ammo cost the country would be bankrupt in half an hour.
