Glad Nash covered this. There are lists out there, on Wiki and other sites, of the HUGE number of intercepts, shootdowns, and general aerial mayhem that was going on from the mid to late 1950's around the fringes of Cold War borders. It wasn't always limited to US snooper aircraft, either. Brits, Swedes, even straying civilian airliners were targets - the Russkies, ChiComs and various satellite country East Bloc air forces had a very robust sense of what constituted "intrusion". Probably a lot of this dropped off after the Cuban Missile Crisis because everybody started to realize just blazing away at aircraft NEAR your borders was a good way to start WW3. (Not that there weren't still incidents. Flight 007, etc)
