I see two kinds of comments below: one that echo Shekhar ji's self-hatred ("greedy desi scientists", "shame to India", "'IJMR' lowly rated" and so on...), and the other, which point out that it is poor journalism and a kind of racism to drag India into a discussion of science, when it is not even factually correct.

  2. The Lancet had 8 retractions in the past 10 years, featuring researchers from the UK, USA, Switzerland, China, Germany, Iceland, Sweden, France, and Canada. Even though there have been no Indian researchers thus far, India should be vigilant against scientific misconduct.

  3. Science has no boundaries and unfortunately neither does scientific misconduct. Responsible journalists should in their pettiness not extend existing divisions of religion and politics into science too, and instead be thoughtful about how they report on science.

  4. Scientific journals have been prioritizing work related COVID-19 to share the knowledge, similar to how the pace of drug approval for vaccines has quickened. The world is anxious, and so have been journal editors and they should not be blamed for trying to share urgent information. That means though some things will slip through the cracks.

The New England Journal of Medicine had 7 retractions in the past 10 years, featuring researchers from India, USA, Spain, UK, Israel, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, and Thailand. Just goes to show how widespread the problem is and why countries should remain vigilant.
