What the Modi administration has done in India that no other administration has really paid attention to before, is building for the first time, the structural foundations of Indian economy. They are not just teaching a man how to fish, but building fishing wharfs, fishing boats, and a whole fish processing industry to support fishermen. What Nehru did with the dams and steel mills is negated by the damage he did to the foundations of Indian economy and democracy. IITs have been a free gift to American economy.

@mdr6714 Not at all. They make wonderful future American graduate students and employees. Not the fault of the students.

@mdr6714 That is wonderful if true. May be IITs are finally realising their true purpose under Shri Modi. Until a few years ago, the default goal of IIT graduates generally was getting 'schol' and settling in the US. Do you have a sense for whether majority of the unicorn founders are US returnees or have never left India? I don't know the answer but it would be interesting information for policy makers.

Very perceptive.

@millennialmind9507 Indeed. The quality of students is comparable to that from top notch public and private colleges in America. At a conservative estimate, that is about 0.5 million US dollars worth education into each student. The policy blind spot over 6 decades is staggering. Nobody cared. Edit: For context, the current cost (before subsidies) of 4 year private college in America is $280,000 (MIT and Princeton). The average annual tax payer cost of K-12 public school education in America is $14,500. For 12 years it is $174,000. Total = ~ $450,000. This is conservative estimate because it neglects lost opportunity costs for society in tax revenues and creativity when those citizens join the work force, and the intangible value of time put in by families in driving, cooking, etc. etc.for the children.

Somebody ought to give The Economist a Nobel peace prize for the occasional factual reporting on India.
