To my simple mind, there is no alternative to smartly done Atmanirbharta to build a technologically advanced society. Competition however exerts a powerful selective pressure to improve standards. The government should map out a sector-vise calibrated exposure to competition, perhaps internal to begin with, and then external, as players build up their standards to compete at an international level. Where there is FDI, there must be a mechanism for technology transfer.
