  1. Not to trivilaise an important topic, but various Op-Ed writers in The Washington Post have been venting at the erosion of the economic freedoms of India's farmers because of the new farm laws. It is clear that they are deeply felt pieces, but they all follow remarkably similar rhetorical devices including an obligatory reference to the 1984 attacks on Sikhs carried out by Congress party leaders after Smt. Indira Gandhi's death. In other words, nothing remotely approaching the depth and the nuance of the debates and discussions going on in Indian media on the range of issues involved with the farm laws. But that is how Indian issues get stylised, when viewed from the distance of a few thousand miles. And, that shapes 'international opinion' which can in turn trickle down into all kinds of things.

  2. I would discount all the soft metrics, which could at least in theory may be used for 'sending a message'. The only one that is worrisome, is the one related to child well being. If there is a true deterioration over time, the reasons for that need to be understood by Indian academics and policy makers.
