This is valuable analysis for public health policymakers. The most striking aspect of it is the remarkable strides in public health India has taken, compared to say, America at a similar stage of economic development. The difference between birth-castes is probably explained by differences in wealth. A good test of this hypothesis, and an internal control, will be to look at life expectancy between the creamy layer in the 'lower castes' and the non-creamy layer. Similar sorting can be done between ashraf muslims and pasmanda muslims, and between 'upper caste muslims' and 'lower caste' muslims. May be future studies will address this.

"Varnashram reservations". Huh? Do you even know what you are talking about?

I wish other religions were included in the analysis. That would have thrown some light on causality. At the least, a similar analysis could have been easily done for christians, sorted by 'upper caste' and 'lower caste'.

@PlatypusPerry- No point in complicating things is the death of science. Christianity has made great inroads into the 'upper castes' in recent decades so there must be sufficient data to understand how wealth plays into it. I am not contesting that birth-caste is still prevalent in society, although decreasing. You should read the paper if you haven't already. It is shoddy science and a political statement. No control for confounding factors, and leaves out clear, optimistic findings in their data that go against the conclusions that they set out to justify. I won't say more.

An additional sorting is of the 'upper castes' by wealth. If the poorer 'upper castes' have worse life expectancy, that will throw further light on causal factors for policy makers.
