  1. At some point, we should stop using pejorative terms like 'vernacular' or 'regional languages' and just call them what they are - Indian languages.

  2.  @islandsunset  Tulu, Gondi or Bhil are all Indian languages in my book. For arguments sake, what would you call Hindi or Malayalam? And what language in India is a 'not-regional' language?

I was told this story by a very senior scientist who retired from a major government research agency: he had gone to France for postdoctoral research and was assigned an office that was dusty from lack of use. His advisor came to check on him after a couple of days, and wondered why the office was still dusty. My friend replied that he was waiting for the cleaning person to come by. The advisor wordlessly took him to the broom closet and nicely asked him to grab a broom and get busy cleaning. Hopefully this new policy will instill dignity of labor from school age.

  4. The government has to make teaching in Indian languages until 5th grade uniformly apply to all schools, especially private schools.

  5. Most of India is living in The Matrix where knowing English is confused with having real knowledge or ability. The number of people who have occupied important positions in Indian society in the past few decades only because they can speak 'good English' is a legion.

  6. Everyone should prepare for some disappointment in the initial few years as there will be some resistance. Hopefully the govt has factored it in and developed contingencies for how to spot and address it.
