Poverty comes in many shapes. If there is not a good road to a village, it cannot attract services dependent on roads, from good teachers to small businesses. If there is not a toilet or running water at home, the time spent in searching for those leaves the searchers poorer in time they could have spent more productively. It is possible to be so oblivious to one's own privilege that easing these most basic burdens of living to those lacking them may seem like an election gimmick to get votes.
