Important topic but Shri Fukuyama's criticisms on China, international relations, and defense purchases don't add up. 1) China: would the critics want the government to lay out in black and white what is happening at the border? Not going to happen. How will it help? The government is playing the hand it was dealt adroitly, and has managed to put considerable international pressure on China. So long as they don't concede anything legally, they can bide their time. 2) Defense preparedness argument seems to be about not spending enough foreign exchanges on buying up arms. A casual examination of the facts shows that this, unfortunately, is not true, certainly within the 6-year tenure of the BJP government. So that sounds like a fake or at least a misguided argument. 3) International relationships: the government has not been shy of being bold in openly showing its hand where it is useful to do so. Numerous recent acts support this this. If Shri Fukuyama wants India to formally join an alliance, I don't believe that is going to happen or should happen. Sworn enemies become close allies as the West and Germany did in two short decades after the second world war. There is no reason not to hope that America and China cannot become friends again. They should on the contrary, for the sake of peace everywhere. Although this is the wrong time to say this, the same can be hoped for India and China as well, if only China stops doing to India what she accuses America of doing to her.
