Ward may have fired the first shot in the war with Japan. The US was already fighting an undeclared naval war against Germany. The first US service personnel killed in the Pacific well could have been pilots of some Wildcats that were inbound to Ward Island* having launched off of Enterprise as she was headed for Pearl. *Were the ship and the island named for the same man. Somehow I don't think Mr Cleaver was involved.
