There's an interesting side story to the Gallipoli Campaign. In 2006 iirc National Geographic contracted with Robert Ballard (USNR, ret) to do a survey of the wrecks in Anzac Cove. They found the wrecks easily enough. In addition they also discovered a number of circular stone structures with a taller stone structure in the center. These were last above water either 8000 BCE or 8000 years ago.

One problem is with anti ship missiles that seriously out range naval gunfire support.

The modified Landing Ships that were equipped with rocket launchers could put out an incredible volume of fire. For a very short period. The turret equipped ships might not have been able to match the initial volume of fire but they had the ability to train rockets on target not directly forward. I've often wondered just how possible it would have been for the US Navy to equip Gato Class subs with a detachable module that would be equipped with a certain number of 6" rockets. Enroute to their patrol areas the sub could conduct a bombardment mission against island airfields. Risking the sub is a lot less than the potential risk of a carrier and its task force. One the rockets are expended the sub dives and discards the module the rockets were carried in. And continues its patrol.

@gotanon8958 That may be true. Plus the jet attack aircraft has more range. The one thing the jet attack air raft does not have is the ability to stay on station for days at a time. The 16" shell is a slight amount of overkill. The best choice for a naval gun today is probably in the range of 105mm or 155mm. For western navies this gives commonality with army artillery organizations.
