Actually the causes of gun violence are the same as the causes of all types of violent crime. Poverty and systemic inequality, which the Republicans are more than happy to ignore or intentionally make worse.

Mental health problems are not the cause of gun violence, but they both stem from the same systemic and societal issues. In other words, the factors that would lead to someone suffering mental health problems are the same ones that might lead someone to carry out gun violence.

@nathanlevesque7812 Perhaps, but America does have a militarized culture, which is another way of saying gun culture. Other countries still have violent crimes, they just don't use guns to commit them. Other countries have guns, and in fact Switzerland has a pretty high ownership rate, but not as high a rate of gun crimes. Actually Switzerland has a very low homicide rate overall. The problem in America is systemic inequality + gun culture.

Interesting how whenever it's a white supremacist or other far right extremist, you don't hear conservatives calling for the entirety of that group to have their rights stripped away, like they do whenever the perpetrator is a member of a marginalized group.

@dmurphy9341 I never said I supported the NRA or lax regulations, so that's a strawman on your part. I specifically mentioned Switzerland to draw a contrast between their policies and those of the US. My argument is that gun violence is a subset of violent crime, and addressing the root causes of violent crime would be the best way to counter gun violence. Next time read what I said in context, before offering a knee jerk reaction to something I never argued.

@jeffbarron5500 If you're going to purposely ignore the systemic causes of violent crime, of which gun crimes are a subset, then you're the one with your head under a rock. There is no correlation or causal relationship between mental illness and violent crime, and people with mental illness are disproportionately more likely to be the victims of crimes than the perpetrators.
