The more essential functions of a senator is the ability to write, negotiate and pass legislation. Many in Congress these days love to "debate" for C-SPAN to create content for their livestream. More working, less talking might be a needed shift to get the Senate back on track.

Please remember that stroke recovery has a lot to do with FAST response at the onset. All reports seem to indicate that Fetterman's wife got him to treatment very quickly, good for her! His rapid recovery is probably the proof of that rapid response. I'm sorry that your mom had a different experience, but each patient's experience is very individual. And actual medical doctors have indicated that multiple times in writing. Please remember that discrimination against disability is illegal and has been for 30 years. (Americans with Disabilities Act, 1992). Let's please continue to be a nation of laws.

The ADA provides that disabled persons who can perform the essential functions of the job are entitled to reasonable accommodation. Captioning is a very reasonable accommodation, especially because we all use captions every time we watch a movie. Important to remember that the essential functions of a corrections officer are not at all related to the essential functions of a Senator. A blind pilot would not qualify for a reasonable accommodation because of the essential features of that job. However, the essential functions of a senator are to serve his constituents, as well as write, negotiate and pass legislation. Captioning doesn't interfere with any of those functions.A senator who reads, then pauses to think, then responds with auditory speech slowly and deliberately, that sounds like a fine Senator to me. I would like all of our senators to read and think more before they speak. I would like fewer congressional figures taking the floor to debate extremist views just to create CSPAN content for their livestream. Unless we want to repeal the ADA, we should be thoughtful about denying reasonable accommodation to qualified candidates. That is discriminatory and illegal. Oz is not qualified because he doesn't live in PA, doesn't know the constituents, and has no experience with governance. Being a TV host and sounding good on camera are not essential functions of the job of senator.

Fetterman does not have a cognitive impairment. He has difficulty with auditory processing, and has little difficulty with processing the written word. Very different concepts.

Important to remember that "speech" is a layered process that includes auditory, written and spoken components. That's why toddlers take approx two years to begin speaking proficiently, although mom knows that the child is understanding and even communicating in other ways before speech is fully in the child's grasp. That is not lack of comprehension. Fetterman is not mentally confused or devoid of ideas. He paused because he was waiting for captions to load on the screen, then chose the words he needed, albeit with a bit of stumble from time to time. Luckily the ADA protects disabled persons from ridicule when they stumble over a word. Discrimination is illegal. In addition, "speech" includes communication through reading and writing. Fetterman prefers reading the written word, and is likely to prefer communicating in writing. Problem solved. Oz is a mistake PA will live with for six years. Fetterman is recovering rapidly and his verbal stumbles will be a memory in a few months. Vote wisely.

Medical professionals have many ways of tracking brain activity and neurologic systems. If those systems were deficient, the doctors would have written limitations into Fetterman's "return to work" letter. No medical doctor has any motivation to give up his certification and end his medical career by falsifying a letter of that type. Your desire to imagine that Fetterman's doctors are lying to the USA population seems like the pursuit of imaginary conspiracy theories. Please be careful because many before you have fallen down those rabbit holes. Fetterman's intelligence and understanding is intact, he simply pauses to look for a word. Anyone who has ever tried to learn a foreign language or improve their vocabulary should be able to understand that concept. You didn't become mentally ill because it took you a minute to remember the word for "towel" in Portuguese.

Electing a TV host with no governing experience.... didn't we just do that a few years ago?( Well, not me, I don't vote for pumpkin headed grifters.) A person who lives in PA with state wide government experience, that's the qualified candidate.

"Speech" is a multi layered process: written speech, auditory response, etc. That's why a healthy intelligent curious toddler learns to walk before they learn to talk. Remember that when you study a foreign language you will often understand the foreign language before you respond in the foreign language. You will often pause to search for that Mandarin word, although you understand exactly what you want to say. Taking a moment to look for a word is not a brain defect. I would love it if more politicians could pause and think carefully before they choose their words.
