I think they were trying to say that the police had an intention to bring him to an emergency room for mental health intervention, care that he was unlikely to seek on his own. The schizophrenia thing might be because schizophrenia is sometimes more serious than bi polar disorder. But those decisions must be made by mental health professionals, not cops. So many mistakes made here.

The young man committed no crime, so he should not have been arrested, much less restrained in such a reckless manner that caused his death.

This is a small town of only 2,000 people. There should be a way to return to the precinct and think it through. There is a young man in this small town with this particular appearance who is experiencing mental issues. Does anyone know this young man? Where might young men in this town hang out with friends? Given that this young man was a town sports hero and popular with his graduating class, with really just a little bit of work, he could find the young man's address, talk to his family, create a better narrative.

If a person is experiencing a mental health episode, by definition they are not able to utilize logical thinking in that moment. This young man was far more calm and non violent than most people in the middle of an episode might be. The law enforcement officer has a greater responsibility to be logical rather than reactive, because the officer should be in control of his faculties and needs to remain calm and think things through. I cannot understand why it never occurred to anyone to contact a mental health professional for an expert opinion on the situation. Does this town have zero psychiatrists? Why not call the town emergency room? All emergency rooms have a psychiatrist on call.

As more police incidents with young men of color continue to occur, frankly it would be quite logical for a young black man to fear police, because he might not survive the arrest even if innocent. This young man committed absolutely no crime, and yet he was restrained in a reckless manner that led to his death. Who would want to comply with such violence?

No, there was a conversation first where the officer spoke to both the younger boy and the young man. The younger boy left, Anton said that he was schizophrenic, then Anton left, but the officer radioed that he was in pursuit of a schizophrenic young man. But since being schizophrenic is not a crime, why is the officer in pursuit? If you really just want him to get care, there are at least five safer ways to do that.

Literally a beautiful young man, a leader in his high school, probably at the beginning of learning how to grapple with bi polar disorder, a mental illness that many people have success with, not clear if he even had a confirmed diagnosis yet. Then this guy decides to arrest him even though being schizophrenic is not a crime. Beyond disgusting. This little town with its four little cops, no, that is not a safe place to live. Beyond tragic. Senators Scott and Booker, please try the police reform legislation again. The Congress has been passing legislation lately. Let's keep the streak going. Pass police reform legislation now!

I think they discuss cause of death at approx 30 mins. They tried to say that bi polar disorder was a cause of death. They also said it was "undetermined" and accidental, but the expert explains why it is actually homicide.

The entire thing was very shady. One of the doctors/medical examiners used as an expert in the George Floyd tragedy to try to exonerate that police officer was used in this case with Anton, so that's a huge red flag. At least the officers in the George Floyd case were found guilty. In this case, this officer escaped prosecution. That's why the father was saying, my son was George Floyd before George Floyd. And this young man had never done a single thing wrong except have a budding case of bipolar disorder that was not well managed. But if you would try to say that bi polar disorder is a cause of death, it would usually be because the patient harmed themselves or an experimental medication went wrong. How is death by cop caused by bi polar disorder?? What world do we live in, and how do we make it stop already? There is so much legislation backed up because of YEARS of inaction by Congress (thanks Mitch) but I hope Sen Corey Booker and Sen Scott put their bipartisan police reform bill on the floor again, and this time Congress (I'm talking to you, republican Senate caucus that likes to block stuff) vote on it and pass it. A fair amount of legislation has been signed lately; here's one more that must get to the President's desk. But we'll probably have to wait until after mid terms in November. YUCH. Yes, there is too much that is not known. That's why his family remarked that the "accidental death" designation was especially unfortunate because it put an end to further investigation. I don't know all the secrets either, but the fact that Anton said to the officer that he was schizophrenic while more official paperwork declares him bi polar hints that his diagnosis might have been very recent and still in process, psychiatrists and social workers still trying to come to the best conclusion. That complicates the guesses about meds even further, since it's not unusual for a person with high blood pressure to try different meds and life style changes before settling on the best treatment. There are many studies that show that it is not unusual for USA clients with depression to switch through five different meds before finding the best fit, and many other studies that show that a regime of meditation, exercise and cognitive behavioral treatment can be superior to any meds. I agree that "what does your doctor say" is a great question to ask. I am horrified that the paid public servant, the police officer, never thought to ask that question. He could have asked Anton as a follow up in the parking lot. He could have knocked on the door and asked Anton's family that question before smashing the car window. He could have called the town emergency room and asked for advice from the psychiatrist on call. I'm sure that handcuffing someone can be done correctly. The point is this officer clearly did not do that, because this young man died in his custody. Also, proper handcuffing protocol probably does not include using the random motorcycle guy. Custody means that person is in your care. This police officer did not use care. In terms of why he was working in this town after retiring from Delaware, they said that a new politician had a "get tough on crime" slogan, and that gentleman insisted on hiring this officer even after he was warned that he had recently been involved in a police brutality investigation over the border in Delaware.

I believe NYPD forbids high speed chases for this very reason. So if an officer makes an arrest after a high speed chase, the police officer is in trouble, so that removes the incentive to begin the chase.

@teth-adam Do you know why the registry is not widely used? Is that decision made by the state or the municipality?

@teth-adam That is a terrible waste of a potential resource. It is possible that some police unions block its usage? It would be nice to write some sort of legislation to mandate usage of the registry, like some workers are required to have their finger prints checked, like teachers.
