@mrb3018 Background checks vary widely from state to state. For instance, what kind of background checks does Texas have if an 18 year old can buy 2 AR 15 and huge amounts of ammunition in the space of 48 hours?

@JohnHallgren I worry that you lack perspective on this issue. People in the USA are dying in terroristic fashion because of a proliferation of guns. The rest of the globe is confused about why we cannot improve this situation because they have gun control handled. I am sad that you have developed such a connection to the word rifle, but I am not confused about why the gun industry uses the word rifle to cloak a horrific weapon like AR 15. Gun dealers like AR 15 because they are expensive weapons. You are either a gun dealer or a person who enjoys getting ripped off by an irresponsible industry that does not value human life. Enough. Gun control is needed; you have lost perspective on this issue.

I stand with Ukraine, but the short attention span of the USA population is a huge problem. I wonder if anyone is still concerned about women and girls in Afghanistan who want to work and go to school. I really resent it when news organizations encourage that bad habit of forgetting important news stories, because they are supposed to be working in the public interest.

AR 15 really is an assault weapon; gun companies call it a rifle because it's good for marketing. Sounds like duck hunting on a fall morning. This horrible weapon is the weapon of choice for mass shootings, used in Uvalde, Buffalo, Parkland, El Paso, Las Vegas, Aurora, Sandy Hook, and more. The USA population is not stupid. There is no purpose in society for a gun that creates this type of harm. If you honestly think the framers expected adolescents to walk around with AR 15, you are delusional.

@mrb3018 Current background checks have numerous gaps; that's why the House passed background check legislation that closes loopholes. It is waiting in the Senate. Sen Murphy and Sen Cornyn are working on yet another iteration of gun legislation; now that seems stalled too. When an adolescent wants two AR 15 and more ammunition than a soldier is issued for combat, a gun dealer should have to ask questions. If the dealer was responsible, he would have asked without being compelled to by law, but I have seen little to believe that the gun industry is responsible.

@UmmYeahOk I don't think AR 15 was used this time, however AR 15 has been used in most of the massive massacres (Sandy Hook, Uvalde, Buffalo, Las Vegas, El Paso, Parkland etc etc etc.) Ugly list, right??. It's also a gun that really doesn't seem to belong in the civilian population. It can't be a great hunting rifle because the animal would be so destroyed, no meat would be viable. Not best suited for self defense. Horrifically irresponsible marketing strategy targeting young teen males, calling the AR 15 a "man card". Eliminating AR 15 might peel away one layer of the onion, so that we can look closer at handguns, street crime, gang activity, etc.

@pogo1140 Yes, this nostalgic memory is more support for a ban on AR 15. You are remembering a time before AR 15 was widely available. AR 15 increased in 2000s due to disgusting marketing strategy targeted to young teen males calling the AR-15 their "man card." Sandy Hook families' successful civil case awarded $75 million because this marketing was so egregious. Not even PLCAA could protect the gun company. That gun company is now bankrupt.

@chadmesser9420 Yes, absolutely, all these well fed guys with guns roaming around Afghanistan while the people are starving and they obviously know nothing about governing. Their economy has collapsed, yet they keep their female population out of the work force despite the potential for growth that these women represent. Utilizing the leverage of the frozen funds from the last elected government accounts might still help extract concessions on rights for girls and women, but ... They do seem to want recognition from the United Nations, so maybe that could provide leverage. Harsh story for sure. But the last time I caught a story on this issue on PBS news hour, the women were still bravely protesting, and all they asked was that the world continued to pay attention, because that was something that kept them a little bit safe. Such a perilous road ahead. And Ukraine...talk about peril ... Overwhelming.....

@chadmesser9420 I'm sure that there were many "national interests" and hidden agendas in play during USA involvement. The corruption, the drug use, etc etc etc. But some veterans seemed to at least find some pride in that, at least while they were there, women could go to work and girls could go to school. So for approx 20 years women could work and girls went to school. That doesn't sound terrible, and that generation is now trying to hold on to see if they can regain these rights that they had come to expect. And so I hope they can get this. I wish USA students would treasure school with such urgency.

Part of the inflation story was interviewing a family going to a baseball game and analyzing how the costs of every element had increased: the ticket, the hot dog, etc. But the family stated that for the sake of baseball, especially after the pandemic, it was worth it. Yes, baseball is always worth it! Go Yankees!⚾

I was quite young, but I do remember that picture of the secretary twisting herself into a pretzel so that she could take the fall for Nixon erasing the tape! Not even a child believed that story. 😎 Impressive that Nixon could inspire such loyalty in his staff though. Scary too. The oath is to the country, not to any one person. Why is it so easy for these people to forget that?
