People don't want to join a military that does not: pay well, protect you from prosecution by opportunist lawyers suing you on behalf of your Enemies like the IRA, and a Military that treats you like dog water after you left the service. Add into the mix of accepting a woke culture which does not create or encourage young men to be strong, brave or patriotic. People ain't going to risk it all for a country or Military who don't like them and treat them like second class citizens. Wokeness and DEI doe not create strong countries. It don't help that recruitment in the UK is done not by the MOD itself, but by a private company called Capita, an infamous name for a terrible company. The British Army has always been small but it use to make up for it out of it's sheer tenacity and grit, hard training and most of the time capable equipment. The reason why the UK has a defence black hole in it's budget is likely due to miss spending of the budget. The problem is the UK Government for some reason has a nasty habit of overpaying for equipment, ships or vehicles. It also has a terrible habit of buying very pricey cutting edge equipment but due to the price tag only buying a limited handful of such things. They never buy decent and good enough quality equipment off the shelf and so able to buy in a large bulk to fill in gaps in capability. The Royal Navy once was the Crown Jewel of British Defence, now it is the constant kicking boy when the next defence budget cut comes around. The UK overspends on fancy tools and not enough of 'good enough' quality stuff that would actually help fill in the numbers and bring in the quantity needed. Our Politicians want Defence to be done cheap, likely so their pals can steal more money off the taxpayer.
