Most of the extra heat that doesn't get absorbed by the case and chamber just goes straight out the muzzle. Very little of the extra heat is absorbed by the barrel.

@MandoWookie The extra heat that wasn't absorbed by the casing doesn't contribute much, but the elevated pressures that two of the NGSW candidates operate at would definitely become an issue for throat life. The Textron case is telescoped over the projectile, so that part of the case mouth acts somewhat as a disposable throat.

@MandoWookie The logic behind the development is a bit of the old full power philosophy, but it's mostly about defeating composite body armor at midrange distances. There's no intermediate cartridge that can do the job.

@MandoWookie These were always full power rounds for .308 Winchester action lengths, no one claimed they would be intermediate cartridges.

@ScottKenny1978 Everything above an intermediate cartridge is full power, including short magnums. The General Dynamics/True Velocity ammo is basically just a slightly hot standard pressure round, and needs a longer barrel to get the required ballistic performance.

@ScottKenny1978 Is this the royal we? Because there's no such official distinction.

@ScottKenny1978 Right, full power covers short action, long action, and magnum action lengths. It's an umbrella term.

@Tankliker Plastic pollution as an environmental hazard doesn't actually apply to these casing. Plastic is a hazard by way of ingestion or entanglement; only lightweight plastics are ingestion hazards, either by directly swallowing large pieces or by eating food contaminated by microparticles. These cases don't float when expended, to resemble food for sea critters, and don't break down easily into microparticles. As for entanglement, the cases are too large to get stuck up a turtles nostril like plastic straws do, and too small to wrap up any animal's limbs. The only real "hazard" they present is being an eyesore.
