It's mostly the charging handle of the Sudanese models that gets the most uncomfortably hot because it's one piece. The Portuguese model still gets pretty warm, but it isn't all one piece and doesn't transfer the heat to where you have to touch the charging handle as easily. Artillerie Inrichtingen were actually the ones that came up with the rear charging handle in some of there experimental prototypes, and ArmaLite adopted it for the AR-10 (which never went into production). From there it became a part of the AR-15 design. Basically, the Portuguese model charging handle worked very well, but the rear CH transfered even less heat and was less complicated & expensive to make.

Yeah, the Portuguese model fixed that weak point on the Sudan model.

That buffer looks just like an oversized version of the Edgewater buffer used in the earliest AR-15 and XM16 models.

ostiariusalpha Oh, how I hate you, autocorrect! "there experimental prototypes" should be "their experimental prototypes," and it was the ArmaLite AR-10A that never went into production. Irritating.
