Because there is no more infidel power in the region to point fingers at and use as a whipping post for their own failures. And already Taliban style radicals are gunning to take down the Pakistani state itself. And I agree with you about Afghanistan. The analogy I would use is the Afghan state/security forces was like one of those inflatable balloon guys you see at car dealerships in the USA. Cut the power, the blower shuts down and the balloon guy instantly deflates. That was the signal sent when we decided to end our involvement in Afghanistan.

  48. Very admirable and brave. Unfortunately if the storm of massed Russian artillery breaks over Ukraine, such ad hoc groups of civilian volunteers will not be sufficient to defend their country. I wish them good luck though.
