  2.  @matsuz100  What happened is Zulfikar Ali Bhutto directed the Pakistani intelligence services (ISI) to begin supporting hardline islamists in Afghanistan in the mid-1970's. Although their are perhaps other factors involved, the introduction of violent, radical islamists was the beginning of Afghanistan's descent into tragedy. Subsequently many players compounded the countries' woes by erroneous perceptions and poorly considered actions.
