The kind of infrastructure the Ukrainians would need to even contest with Russia for control of the air is beyond their capability and further those assets would make the kind of targets that would be easy for Russia to hit. The best they can achieve now is to continue to put low and medium altitude combat aircraft and helicopters at serious threat from smaller, less easily targeted man-portable missiles like Stinger and Strela. And Ukrainian forces should go to ground as often as possible. Cheers.

There was no chance of Ukraine joining NATO anytime soon, because the NATO member states did not want the responsibility of defending Ukraine. The reason Putin attacked is because he feared having a a prosperous, free and democratic Ukraine on his border, that he did not control. In any case he never believed Ukraine is actually a separate country. Don't blame NATO for this war. Putin is solely to blame. Period.
