He didn't 'get' his Green Beret he was awarded an honorary one. This does not confer the right to wear it with a uniform and he absolutely should not be unless he's in a Corps sponsored position (such as the role Bear Grylls fulfills) which Chris is not.

@letsdoitnow121 - read my posts pal, does it sound like I'm winging this or is it possible I know a bit? 🤔 If it helps you decide I was the Training Standards Sergeant on Commando Training Wing when Chris made the programme. I know far more about the training than he (or you) ever will. I'd suggest that at that time no one was as intimately acquainted with the training syllabus as I was, I'd completed training (naturally) taken 2 recruit Troops all the way through and one 1/2 way through and then as a SNCO I'd assessed and assured over 50 other recruit Troops and at least 20 Potential Royal Marine recruit courses. That's a 'candidate' pool of circa 3000 individuals. I think that qualifies me to comment from a position of some authority on this topic. But hey, you've watched some YT videos so maybe you know more than me. 🤷🏻♂️ And FYI 'Completing' the Commando Tests does not make you a Commando no matter what Chris may feel about it.

Chris is a top guy and a brilliant film maker BUT he's not earned that Commando flash or beret so has no place wearing them on a uniform.

He did not complete RMC basic training (despite what he may say) he followed and documented a Recruit Troop through training. Doing (and even passing) the 4 Commando Tests does not make you a Commando, a club level cross-fitter could rock up and pass the tests. The 'Commando factor' is doing it when you've had 7 months of thrashings, suffered long term calorie and sleep deprivation, are carrying injuries and the stress of basing your whole future on the outcome. If you're not in that position you've not completed Commando Training. End of.

Gents, in the interest of avoiding a pointless display of "he did/he didn't" willy waving: I was a SNCO on Commando Training Wing CTCRM when Chris filmed his RM documentary. I'm well aware of what he did as I literally signed off some of the RAMS for his filming. And I stand by my statement that he's a top bloke but ... he categorically did not pass the Commando Tests or Commando Training. He put in a cracking physical display (and it would have been impressive even for someone 1/2 his age) but that is not the same as 'doing' Commando training. Tens of thousands of blokes (and a handful of women) have given their all to try and earn that Lid and many thousands have failed in their endeavours and no matter how impressive their performance was they didnt get a Lid just for being good eggs whereas he did. He got the honorary accolade as a friend of the Corps, as a civilian that does not accord him the right to wear it in uniform (unless it's in the privacy of his bedroom and his Mrs is into playing dress up!).

@moddeydhoo4094 - I am intimately acquainted with his work, did you miss the opening words of my post?
3
@liam9196 - in the 80yrs since the RM has been exclusively responsible for Commando training over 30 men have died trying to earn the right to wear the Green Beret. It's not pedentry its a standard, if you think that's unnecessary then I'm going to presume you never made that standard ... in which case why are you commenting?
3
Cheers RW, now stand by for John S accusing you of being a fake account 🙄
3
@Mark-jt5cs - we hand out dozens of Green Berets to 'friends of the Corps', that does not come with the right to wear one in uniform.
3
@letsdoitnow121 replying to someone else and referencing me is an interesting move 🤦🏻♂️ I've got 25yrs in the Corps, what have you got?
3
@Hartley69 - come on Jack you can do better than that, the AACC is 13 weeks (or 15 or 17 if your Trade is non 'Field' orientated and you opt to do the 2 optional candidate preparation courses too) you must have come across plenty of Commando trained MAs/Phots/Jungles in your time? In any case he didn't participate in the delights of an AACC, he just shadowed a Recruit Troop (in reality he checked out 3 x Troops before picking the one which was most photogenic with the most amenable Training Team).

@letsdoitnow121 - my issue is with you jumping in here giving it the big I am when you know sweet FA. CT was presented with an honorary Green Beret, this does not give him the right to wear it in uniform. If you don't know the background maybe you should stay out of the conversation until you do.
2
@VIPICCB8 - Andrew and William both served full time in the military so you're wholly incorrect.
2
@Dan123. - err the pic on this video is him in uniform, this sort of negates your whole point 🤷🏻♂️ And you might have to be more specific on where I'll find PMs comment, there's a few videos on here I'd have to trawl through.

@highvoltageswitcher6256 - "bile" 🤣 what a ❄️. The RM has no trouble recruiting because, thankfully, blokes who apply for the Corps aren't weak willed whiners. Toodles.
1
@andymcg9773 - poor 🎣 attempt. 2/10, must try harder.
1
@andymcg9773 - I think he's a good egg and I admire him for what he did but as Major Paul Matin says on the final episode 'here is that rare beast a HONORARY Green beret' and I think he seems to have forgotten that. But no matter what he's forgotten I'm not having civilian gobshites coming on here giving it big licks about what he is and what he can wear. I presume you're a Pongo given your use of 🦎? You can stir the pot as much as you want, you've paid the entry price for this party but the civvies can jog on 😇
1
@letsdoitnow121 - you're well off the mark, the Corps gives out plenty of Green Berets to 'respected friends', it's been going on for decades so is not an issue. CT appears to think it entitles him to wear it in uniform. And that's the background you appear not to get. Or maybe you do, in which case feel free to enlighten me with your knowledge. I'm on a beach, I've got time to kill.
1
@WozzaDekon - let's just agree to disagree on what "passing all the physical standards" actually means. A good club level cross-fitter could pass the Commando Tests (with appropriate introduction to the Endurance and Tarzan courses) the hard part is passing them after 30 weeks of thrashings, calorie depravation, injuries, sleep deprivation etc. It was a good effort, lots of dedication but that's not 'Passing'.
1
@Cous1nJack - you've lost me there pal. Why do you think I want Chris to be naked?
1
@simonhellier7281 - what has this got to do with Vice or Rogers? Or are you trying to express 2 separate sentiments and are just doing it badly?
1
@VIPICCB8 - you fundamentally misunderstand what medals are. Originally they were gifts by the Sovereign to their Knights, campaign medals came hundreds of years later. As such (in the UK) the award of medals, decorations, awards and military rank are entirely at the behest of the Sovereign. If you don't like that it's tough luck.
1
@VIPICCB8 - the lack of self awareness and hypocrisy in your post is incredible even for YT! You're from a Nation which literally slaughtered and displaced another race and stole their country. Your Nation perpetrated the longest crime in history which cost the lives of millions of Africans. Your President is the Supreme Commander of your military and yet the previous one openly mocked the parents of a dead American soldier by claiming they weren't really American due to their Asian heritage but that's not disrespectful?! And most tellingly off all the good old US of A has invaded 2 sovereign Nations in this century leading to a death toll far greater than WW1 & WW2 combined. Yet you feel you're in a position to opine and preach: what could be more American than that?
1
@christerrill5101 - nice to correspond with you again Chris, I have done before, in person, on a number of occasions at CTCRM. So in which element are you saying I'm incorrect? Do you believe you are entitled to wear Commando Flashes and Lid with uniform? Did you go back and undertake an AACC after I'd left the Death Star? Because, if not, the Uniforms Act 1894 is still extant and wearing of uniform without A Letter of Authorization remains a criminal offence and I don't recall PM issuing you such a letter? But maybe the RN did prior to your latest undertaking.
1
@christerrill5101 - that's a kind offer but not only do I not drink alcohol but I spend winter in the Caribbean so won't be back to the UK until April.
1
@christerrill5101 - or, get to Belize and make a program on the plight of indigenous people losing their lands in the face of uncontrolled tourist development (I realise there's an obvious duality there given that I have a place in Placencia but I co-own a dive school with a Belizian and live in a traditional house in the grounds)
1
@christerrill5101 - if you think I'm being unreasonably harsh on you just get me started on religion and how I feel about the outcome of traditional societies 'meeting' (prominently) Western religion 🤬! If there was a scoville scale for being non- religious I'm a Scotch Bonnet 😁
1
@christerrill5101 - and ... I think I first came across your work in the mid 90s when you made a program about the horrific trade in apes, something I drew upon when I spent a year in Sierra Leone in 2000 and split my time between fighting rebels (and totally unofficially Chinese poachers, whom I dislike even more than religious zealots!)
1
@christerrill5101 , and and ... I also learned to dive in the Caribbean, in Belize with 45 Cdo in '93. I've dived the Blue Hole +50 times since but nothing comes close to the awe I felt that first time.
1
@christerrill5101 - if you want to discuss societal interactions with genocidal repercussions we should first get some food and drinks ready as that could take a long time to get through! The more I learn about how Europeans interacted with other parts of the world the more I want to live in a rural farm with more dogs and donkeys than people!
