  2. The field hand signal for friendly forces is to tilt back your head and draw 2 fingers down the throat either side of the windpipe. It replicates the location that Iban warriors had tattoos and comes directly from that conflict.

Yes, for a few reasons: You don't need magnification when the targets are up close (as they are in the jungle) The reduced field of vision and monocular picture through a scope is no good when you're looking for danger in dense undergrowth. Scopes can mist up in the humid conditions rendering them useless (not so much of a problem with modern scopes but why take the chance!)

  10. Belize has been a fully independent nation for 42yrs. Britain trains there at the invite and request of the Govt of Belize. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement, Britain gets a jungle to train in (and which it pays significant sums to do so) and Belize gets income and a significant military power familiar with their country.

  16. I thought Belize had more nasty plants and creepy crawlies than Brunei but the climate was harder in Brunei. In short, neither was easy or comfortable!

  17. I've got significant experience in both Arctic and jungle regions and the Arctic is by far the most difficult environment to operate in. With even rudimentary skills the jungle will keep you alive whereas the (winter) Arctic will kill you in an afternoon!

  18. Well in my long career as a Royal Marines Commando I know of 1/2 a dozen Arctic trained troops who died from environmental issues in the Arctic but none who suffered a (non combat) fatality in the jungle. That seems pretty conclusive to me.
