00:42:12 looking at Captain Pellew and Captain Broke's Tangent Sights they fitted to their cannon 1,100 yards (1,005m, 3300 feet, 0.625 miles) is the highest gradation, so that gives you a there about of what two of the best naval officers of the age would think would be a possible speculative hit and just like sights fitted to rifles the actual range you'd normally hit at is much lower.

57:50 an interesting example of how they knew about and would look for certain types of timber, HMS Victory has live oak at the bow end of her keel, being the area that needs to be strongest to take the waves and ideally coming as a single piece of timber to increase that strength. Live oak was perfect as it was strong and naturally very curved and therefore perfect. So was shipped over to the UK, possibly illegally stolen as we have no record how Victory got that piece of oak and used on Victory.

@davidwright7193 stealing it was nothing to do american independence, it was just there are only few places in the US that have Live Oak and some of that land was not British and the bits that were, were mostly owned by private individuals and not the Crown. Making the options limited, time consuming and subtle transport was on irregular timetable, so it was often much easier to just nick it, especially as it was already relatively expensive due to transportation.

Or try and fit all twelve guns on that displacement like the three turrets on Nelson and Rodney
