Hi Drach back in your USS Constitution video you claimed once the Royal Navy had captured USS president you said they took design ques from her, I'm interested where the source was for the UK taking information from USS President. As I have read about the notes they took from her and they were not positive in the slightest, they did say a strong hull, was it that they took. As I haven't found anything positive about them as by the time of 1812 they were 2 decades old and out of date. HMS Endymion which wasn't that new a ship, which captured President was a better ship in every way from speed 14 knots which was a lot faster than any of the 6 frigates, to matching firepower with President in all but the type of oak and possibly cross bracing (although Endymion may have had that) and Britain didn't have access to that type of oak anyway. And Endymion had a class made from her lines, however that was before the war of 1812. I can imagine the initiative hull deisgn being taken but I was under the impression that by even before 1805 other ships were already using it.

00:34 also a 32 pounder gun ship would have been slower and one of the things noted when Chessapeake and President were captured was that they were surprisingly slow. So 32 pounders would have made them even slower, this would have been an issue as a 64 gun and 74 gun would have a larger sail area meaning the 32 pounder armed 6 frigates wouldn't be able to run

If the war was when they were built that makes sense as they were revolutionary ships but by 1812 they were out of date.

@bluemarlin8138 well actually they repaired the ship and both Chessapeake and President were marked as slow. We actually don't know if it had worse sailing characteristics, it was made later when more advances were made all we know is it wasn't as powerful, it should have been slower but better maneuvering but as I said technology was actually moving quite quickly at this point. The issue is that we have no evidence they were fast especially by 1812 standards. The other issue here is they didn't punch above their weight as there were entire clases of ship their size and power, such as HMS Endymion the French design it was based off of and the severn class built to it's design. Endymion which was the fastest ship in the entire Royal navy a decent amount faster than the 6 frigates, which was started production a year after the six frigates, but completed at the same time and was just a better ship, not even ifs or buts it was factually a better ship, as we see (in fact from other ships as well) 24 pounders easily even at extended ranges just punched straight through white and live oak, so even their strengthened hull was of no help.
