@cooldudecs : Again, where is the evidence that Germany, specifically, and the G7 more broadly, are not prepared to take this hit? Again, where is the evidence that Russia has the storage capacity to "turn off the taps" for any significant time before they have to cap well heads? Again, where is the evidence that Russia has the expertise or the infrastructure to get its fuel to any other customers anywhere else in the world? You speak from a place of passion and emotion. I appreciate that. But that is not reality, tovarisch.

@osark2487 : There is zero evidence to suggest that Germany faces anything like the privation you suggest, even if the Russians commit suicide by destroying their energy industry. That being the case, I have to wonder about your motivation for ignoring the facts and dragging Germany. If wishes were fishes, etc.

This idea that Germany is "in play" is not supported by any evidence, so much so that it seems irresponsible to me to represent it otherwise. Russia has to keep the energy flowing. They literally have no other choice, because of their shitty pipeline infrastructure and nearly nonexistent storage capacity. Russia isn't bluffing, no. The reality is more mundane. They've made a request, and it's been rejected. They'll keep pumping the gas, and they'll get a nice pile of Euros and USD in return, that they can visit whenever they want, as long as they don't actually use any of it. One day, when they get rid of Putin, and finally get their shit together, they can have all that money to help rebuild their wrecked economy. Post script: Even if the Russians are suicidal/stupid enough to cut off the gas, Germany is ready. Europe is ready. The rules-based world order is ready. Fuck Russia.

Hmm. I see no evidence that Germany is "in play." To the contrary, the government is actively and loudly preparing the population and the business community for the coming squeeze. This take that Germany is in thrall to the Russians because of Nordstream comes across as sensationalist melodrama. But maybe I'm missing something?
