  1. It's about succession. The Ayatollah's son will now become president. Which will open the regime to popular criticism of hereditary rule and (ironically) strengthen the IRGC and weaken the mullahs and Khamenei. If anybody assassinated him, it was somebody who supports Mojtaba. (And "the president doesn't really have any power" is a facile take, as Raisi was being groomed specifically to become Khamenei's successor, never mind the brutality Raisi personally meted out over the years.)
