  1. Close, you're ehading down the right track that Peter is missing. You can take all the semiconductor design courses you want, learn all the book-stuff and absorb all the knowledge from professors, but try applying that in the real world when you have to design something based on the multitude of functions it needs to perform. That's what Samsung, Intel, Nvidia, and others are doing. TSMC takes those designs and fabricates them, but I do think TSMC sources most of the component materials needed for the majority of what it does. The only time the designer would step in to 'source' something is if a new technology or substance is to be used in the fab process, then the design company would work with a source company to produce it and get it to TSMC (or another fab operation).
