  1. None in Yosemite, you're thinking Yellowstone. Yosemite is where you slide off water-slickened steep granite that's next to a waterfall and posted with signs saying "Danger, water-slickened steep granite."

  3. I've never had a problem with bears in 40 years of hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mtns. Just don't leave food out in an accessible location. The same applies in Colorado so Mr. Zeihan should be aware of it already.

  4.  @thomasjaggers3576  No biggie. We DO have an area as potentially bad as Yellowstone, the Long Valley Caldera on the other side of the Sierra NEvada Mtns from Yosemite. Mammoth Mtn Ski Resort is the west rim of the 'caldera cone', the other is about 15 miles to the east (Glass Mtn near the Nevada state line). Not as active with impressive geysers, boiling mud pits, and geothermal sites as Yellowstone, but if either goes off we're all "f'd".

  5.  @oveidasinclair982  Yeah, some biggie bears up there in Canada. The ones down here are smaller black bears. Kinda timid so fairly easy to scare off, but they are sneaky buggers and can raid a campsite at night so you need something like a bear canister for food. Some backcountry camp areas have even had heavy metal bear boxes installed. Cheers
