  1. Probably not on topic, but I had a few co-workers back in the 1990s who despised being called 'Iranian', they considered themselves 'Persian' first and foremost. And they were not fans of the Islamic regime at all. Both grew up there, got sent here for college educations, then managed to get 'green cards' and stay here. Both were very sharp engineers. Iran's loss, the USA's gain.

  3. Or the government attempting to keep the focus on enemies outside the country, notably Israel and the USA. Its a popular method when you have a lot of internal problems, such as political, ethnic. or economic. Kind of a "rally-around-the-flag" situation.
