  4. Dam designers should take into account the local conditions and tailor the project to them. What works in one place will not work in another. Every dam is unique. One size fits all doesn't work, as the Chinese are finding out.

  18. The huge lake behind the dam has changed the local climate and rainfall patterns and so has made it worse.

  19. I live near a big hydroelectric/flood control dam. Every day they calculate how much water to release, balancing the needs of the fish downstream vs. estimated electricity usage all while keeping room for the Spring runoff when the snow melts and also irrigation needs downstream. It's quite an involved calculation. It looks like the Chinese only want to generate as much electricity as possible and screw everything else.
