  8. Politicians seem to think that they can replace Germans with thousands of years of shared history, religion, and philosophy with Middle Easterners with a completely different history, culture, and religion as if they are interchangeable widgets, just so long as the numbers match up. @NO-bw5dn

  16. You need to really research China's situation. They are currently starting to fall down a very long flight of stairs. I think when they reach the bottom they will resemble a very large version of North Korea, a blood-thirsty dictatorship closed off from the world.

  20. Germany seems to be attracted to oppressive autocratic regimes, first Russia and now China. Who are they going to be friends with next, North Korea? Cuba? One wonders if there is not some quirk in the German character that causes this. Not throwing shade on our German brothers, just observing interesting coincidences.

  21. I think he meant in Germany. I read that at the time of WW1 one-third of Americans had German ancestry. Perhaps in the future there will be more Germans in the U.S. than Germany, sort of like the Jewish population is higher in the U.S. than in Israel, at least last I heard.

  23. Well, it would be pretty stupid to not adjust to new realities wouldn't it? What he is predicting is based on today's trajectories and those trajectories will inevitably change. Remember when Bill Gates said 64k should be enough for anybody? Someone else famous, their name escapes me, said that he saw a world wide market for a few dozen computers or some ridiculously small number. Well, that statement was made when 1 computer completely filled a large room, it gave off enough heat for Moscow to stay cozy in winter, and took the power consumption of a Western state to operate. Improvements were made. Should he stick with his prediction no matter what? @utahcornelius9704

  24. The YouTube algorithm rewards hyperbolic titles with more recommendations. You will often see "disaster" "bizarre" "weird" "catatrophic" in a lot of creators' titles for this reason. Don't blame the player, blame the game.

  30. As far as I know I do not have one drop of German blood in my body, so I'm not bragging on "my people", but I would totally agree. The Germans have shown themselves to be amazing people. Never count them out. At Versaille the allies, particularly the French, wanted to so castrate Germany that they would never again be a threat...and 20 years later here's the famous photo of Hitler looking at the Eiffel Tower.

  34. When you are shipping electricity several countries away it can get real expensive. It also makes your country dependent on the other countries for your power supply. I think Germany's best course is to get nuclear up and running and be sulf-sufficient. I think the world would be a more peaceful place if every country was independent in food and energy. @Flixerine

  36. That almost seems to be a universal trait. Certainly America is that way and even China as a nation is doing it by antagonizing the very markets that gave it its astounding success. I wonder if the next time you heard someone braying about evil corporations and using up the Earth's resources ask them "so, for planet Earth, would you be willing to give up your smart phone? Forego your daily shower? Walk everywhere you go? Foreage for your own food out in the forest?"

If an <ethnicity's> birthrate falls below 2.1 then that population will shrink and continue to shrink as long as it stays below 2.1 until poof! All gone. Now the "German" <nationality> may continue, but then the typical "German" will be rather swarthy with brown hair, brown eyes, a bit of a tan, somewhat shorter, more than likely Muslim...The distinction is between "nationality" and "ethnicity". An <ethnicity> is people of a common bloodline, common ancestors, and therefore often certain physical characteristics, like the "German milkmaid" trope, blond, blue-eyed, fair skinned. A <nationality> is just all the people living in a certain geographic location no matter where they originated. Big difference. The German ethnicity can totally die out but the German nationality can be going strong at the same time.

  43. I grew up in Colorado and did a lot of the same hikes that he does. All I can say is take it easy on your knees, you might need those later. And for God's sake don't jog! Walk or ride a bike instead. Every jogger I know needed knee replacement later in life.

  45. I'm wondering what will happen if/when they get past all the Russian trenches and the absolute millions of anti-tank mines. It could get exciting. I think of D-Day which happened on June 6, 1944 and the Allies didn't finish the job until May, 1945. Sometimes it takes longer than we prefer. We'll see. @artrocious

  48. I do not think alternative energy is anywhere near being ready for prime time. Like EV cars. The tech is not there yet. When solar panels are 80% efficient, when better designed windmills are available, when EVs have a 400 mile range and charging takes 5 minutes. It's like buying a bunch of day-old chicks and then immediately turning on the stove to cook fried chicken. Too soon, too soon.

I would think it's a given that when someone like PZ makes predictions you should always assume that he is predicting "based on current trends", in effect, all lines continue on in a straight path. Of course there all always unforeseen events, black swans, but also a lot of black cygnets (baby swans, I looked it up). A lot of small things can equal one big thing. I don't get why people always come back and say "YOU WERE WRONG!". Perhaps people like PZ are assuming that they are speaking to critical thinkers who are aware of this fact. Perhaps that is an over-assumption.

  50. I read about a study that looked for the "why" you speak of. The closest corelation was found between female education and birth rate: the more educated women become the fewer babies they want, if any. Not definitive proof, but interesting nonetheless.
