  11. I'm surprised the EU has lasted as long as it has. Putting Germany, France, and Italy in the same room just sounds like the recipe for a bar fight. Too much bad history, too different thinking processes, too different approaches to life. "MACH SCHNELL!!!" and "wine, women, and song" don't mix very well.

  12. I just don't see the European countries being able to get any closer than they are now. They're too different, too much bad history and "lest we forget" events and depradations upon the other in history. Plus there's an awful lot of national pride and in some countries national arrogance, France and Germany, for example. They just seem too different. I always think of Germany and Italy and how absolutely different in everything they are, especially approach to life. Italians are into wine and food and music and enjoying life and the Germans are more "get 'er done" and both have pretty big egos. I can't think of any place on Earth that has more separate and distinctive cultures all packed into one place. It will be interesting to watch. I like Europe. It's unfortunate that they don't like the US. I think it hurts their pride that the US had to intervene in both World Wars and save them from themselves and continued that through the Cold War, because I have no doubt that they'd all be speaking either German or Russian today, probably German first and then later Russian. They seem to understand that with Russia it's "today Ukraine, tomorrow Romania, Moldova, Poland, Latvia, etc." Russia is in an expansionist mood and that needs to be stopped as soon as possible.

  24. Other than the snark at America (how European of you) I tend to agree: what is the alternative? I suspect the EU is a typically ossified bureaucratic mess, I'm thinking of the Austria-Hungarian Empire here, that will just bumble along, creaking, and manage to change just enough to keep together for a long time. If it breaks up I suspect all of you obviously superior Europeans will be at war with each other sooner or later. You know, business as usual in European history. The EU took a large number of pirate ships all trying to sink each other and put all of the pirates on one ship so that they now had a common interest in keeping it afloat. If you moved them back to their own ships they would start sinking each other again. It's what pirates do. And Europeans.

  27. What government isn't? Communist, democratic, socialist, theocratic, they all seek to milk the liitle people and live large on their labor. It just seems that a democratic government is the least worst. As Churchill said "Democ­ra­cy is the worst form of gov­ern­ment, except for all the oth­ers."

  29. So if it wasn't for that pesky U.S. the EU could happily sail into a beautiful sunset? I suspect if it wasn't for the U.S. there wouldn't be a Europe. Russia would spread from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Mediterranean. You Europeans sure hate the U.S. Why don't you pal up with Putin and Xi and see how that works for you. You want to be a Superpower but you just can't join the club without help from another Superpower and that deeply pisses you off. You had your chance to be THE superpower back in the 1500s to the 1930s but you were too busy killing each other to unite and do it. You missed your chance. Get over it.

But you cannot take a man, or a country, out of his time and judge him by today's standards. Imagine our progeny 100 years from now judging us: "those f*ckers burned all of our oil! Did you know that they had "personal automobiles"?. Oh the humanity!!!". And yet most of us have personal automobiles and think nothing of it today. So yes, Europe has a colonial past. And all the other countries of the time were envious because they wanted to do the same damned thing but couldn't pull it off. Stop with the making people today, feel guilty for what other people, now dead, did. If you want retribution for past sins, dig up those past people and beat their bodies with sticks.

It is all political theater where the Democrats and Republicans strut around shouting at each other so people will think that there is a difference between them. Don't take it too seriously. We don't.

  41. A severely weakened Russia is in Europe's interest, since Russia has been and is its greatest threat. I'm surprised people can't see that. Some of the most vociferous supporters of Ukraine are former Soviet satellites. They know how bad it is to be ruled by Russia. NATO was formed to counter Russia, to keep them out of Europe. Now is their chance to finish the job using Ukrainian troops instead of their own.

  43. A democracy is where every single citizen votes on every single law. That worked in ancient Greece because the population was small. It's hard to get 50 million people in a room for a vote nowadays. The US has a "representative republic" which means rather than us 300,000 people going to the meeting we elect one person to represent all 300,000 of us. That's about as close to Greek democracy as we can get today. @eodyn7

  48. I suspect that what is going to happen is European leaders will allow millions of refugees in because "muh demography" and then find out that, not only don't they need them, they no longer need a large part of the European population either, so twice the unemployed.

  52. Today's dilemma for governments: they're caught in the middle between being "woke" and being realistic. Lean too far one way and the "woke" babies throw a temper tantrum and too far the other way and the wheels fall off your nation. Walk down the middle and both sides hate you. I think it may be time to smother that "woke" baby in its crib.

  53. That's what saddens me, the loss of identity. I have never been to Europe, I was never a strong swimmer, but all of the unique cultures, languages, histories, styles of dress, architecture, all packed into such a small space, by American standards, slowly being greyed out to everyone everywhere dressing the same, driving cars that look the same, even the new buildings are the same. It seems the more we shout "diversity is our strength" the less diverse we become.
