Asians (& Africans & Indians & all other non-white-skinned people) were banned from entering Australia until 1972 - so until then there wasn't much opportunity to be very racist. Since then the capital cities have grown large well integrated and well accepted Asian communities. Similar to the United States, generally only rural or poorer areas have learned to fear Asians (hence learned hatred). Luckily Australia has far less rural and poor residents than the United States, resulting in much lower levels of racist hatred. In the capital cities racism towards Asians is lower than ever: 11 of my group of friends (all born in the 1970s) married people of Asian ethnicity - this is now considered normal rather than uncommon.
