Still tragic that traditional Jewish culture in Europe was almost completely wiped out.Imagine a trip through Poland, Ukraine, Belarus without the Shoa, you could find a Jewish community in every small village, in every town, but that is lost. But nice to see that the old traditions live on in new places.

@n.k477 True, the survivers refounded chassidic communities, as u can see on their names like Satmar, Belzer or Lubawitsch. Thats why i wrote that they keep old traditions alive in new places.

@negationf6973 I'm not a friend of idealization of history. Probably times would have been hard for jewish communities either way as in all states of east Europa larger parts of the christian majority were antisemitic, it was not paradise that was lost; in the towns and villages the Jews had to live separated in their own quarters, there were restrictions in schools and universities for them and so on. I've read a lot about the Shoa and still cant believe that my ancestors erased a whole culture.

@negationf6973 I get your point. The diversity of culture once existed, not without harsh conflicts, is gone. But not gone as a result of normal transformation a lot of cultural groups passed through up to total assimilation in eastern Europe like the Lemken in the western Ukraine or the almost extincted culture of the Liven (sorry, idk the english name for them) in Latvia, the Lipka-Tatars in Lithuania. Maybe you know the book of Peter Manseau "Songs for the butcher's daughter," if not i strongly recommend, its beautiful and tells of the vanished world and language. Thank you for the exchange so far.

@gnawershreth Interesting point! Sounds plausible, but I think you also have to consider the socio-economic conditions of the surrounding majority society. If this had remained strictly religious and rather poor, leveling would have been difficult. Look at the Mennonites or Amish people, they have kept their culture for centuries without any repression from the majority society in the US and other countries. In the end we will never know what could have happened.
