Flatpak/Snap/Appimages are the future. As more packages are added to any of the three, the LTS distros look more and more compelling. I want the apps I interact with everyday to be bleeding edge not necessarily the system critical/background applications. I want a stable base and up to date apps on to of them. Rolling releases offer up to date apps, but you are always risking an update to bork your setup or weird library interactions.

4:58 Dorian I believe that in the current snap standard the libraries are not shared and nothing interacts with something outside. However there exists a "classic" snap standard. In it the app can interact with the core system. These apps take longer to get approved because they needed to be vetted by a human. I think they discourage this type of app unless you have a good reason. The software boutique used by Ubuntu Mate is a "classic" snap . However it makes sense because it is used to install software in Ubuntu Mate.

I think the downside to Appimages is that they are not self updating. They could be, but that depends on the author. Some at most provide a notification letting you know to update the appimage because a new one has come out. No system is perfect, but each has its benefits. Flatpak has a lot of support from app developers and allows other repositories, Appimage is as close to upstream as possible and no slowing down due to virtualization. Snap I think has a superior CLI than Flatpak. It is more simple and to the point. They should at least provide an easy way to update all Flatpaks like Snap with 1 command.

I don't think Canonical gave up. Snap seems like it could still evolve. Alan Pope has stated that they want to fix theme issues and make them lighter and share libraries. Having said that, I believe the recent crytomining has probably given Canonical pause. I think they are carefully planning the next evolution of snap . In contrast Flatpak seems like it is setting up to freeze. They have stated that the latest version is pretty much feature complete and will be feature freeze with upcoming releases.

Thanks for the reply. I've been loving Plasma by the way. It is amazing how flexible and light it can be at the same time. You can tailor it to your personal needs. You can change how Alt - Tab looks by searching for task switcher. Also you can get a look at all windows that are opened in each virtual desktop by doing the shortcut for Show desktop Grid. I think it is by default Alt-F8, but you can change it in global keyboard shortcuts.

Taking a big risk with the wife. Good Luck

If you have trouble finding menu items. You should look into Ubuntu Mate 18.04. They have implemented the HUD functionality that Unity used to have. Easily searching menu items just by clicking alt and typing for something.

It will let you search menu items in applications items like File Edit View. It will only search those menus though, not any menus with icons. However, it can be a big help with applications that have dense menus like Libreoffice applications, Audacity, Gimp and Krita.

Are you the same Dorian that used to make a version of the K-Meleon browser available?
