I left my corporate job in 2005, and I've never regretted it. I made a lot more money than I would have if I had stayed in corporate America, and I've had unbelievable experiences and freedom. It was the best life decision I ever made. 15-20 years from now, I think you might feel the same way.

I loved The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and I was lucky enough to read it after taking three or four philosophy classes as an undergraduate. What a great book to start this list with.

A few years ago, I taught a friend of mine what a commonplace book is, and she kept up with one for a long time. I think she's out of the habit now, but she still has them. Great tips in g this video.

I really enjoyed this video. That Adlee book is great. I'd love to see you do a similar video focused on reading fiction, since this video was so focused on nonfiction.

This was a really great book. If I ever go back to get my PhD, this will be my go-to. Thanks, Jared, for this.

Jared, have you read The Idea of Wilderness by Max Oelschlaeger? It's not a book you can read in an evening, but I think you'd enjoy it. Max is a brilliant writer. He's also the man who explained the expression "hermeneutics" to me. Hermeneutics? Wasn't he a linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles?

@jobuckley2999 I do, yes. I have multiple myeloma and I was unable to work for several months earlier this year because of a series of hospitalizations.

I haven't read any of David Foster Wallace's novels yet, but I finished his essay collection, Consider the Lobster, yesterday. That guy can WRITE.

@Ek70R Are you suggesting that I'm abnormal? 😀 It's like anything else. Some people work well outside a corporate environment, while a lot of people do better with a traditional job.
7
@Ek70R Oh, I was just being playful. I think it really is petty hard for the average person to escape corporate America, actually. Jared has a good head start because of the following he has here on YouTube. Also, sometimes people are just forced into situations where they HAVE to make it work. The income ups and downs can be especially challenging.

@_jared Thanks, I'm having a good week so far. I'm going for a good month in February.

You've convinced me to read The Wheel of Time. Ranking that higher than LOTR might be as controversial as leaving LOTR off the list. 😉

Wendell Berry is so great. I'm glad to see any video recommending a book by him.

Catch-22 is one that, for whatever reason, I haven't gotten to. I started The Name of the Rose last year but didn't get far.

I really enjoyed this video, Jared. I got my degree in English in 1993, but I almost had enough hours of philosophy to double major. (I love electives.) Of course, I'm at a very different stage in my life, but I've recently been thinking about getting enough graduate school hours that I can adjunct at some of the local community colleges. Some of my friends in academia have been encouraging me to do so. Would make for an interesting post-retirement career. I even enjoyed the advertising in this video. Those Factor meals are really convenient, especially for someone who wants to lose weight.

@jedicharls I like it!

This is a lesson I've learned over the last few years, too.

Like you, I dislike self help books in general. If they worked, it wouldn't be such a thriving industry, right? But, also like you, I really enjoyed Digital Minimalism, and I did the 30-day digital fast. His book changed my relationship with the Internet, but probably not as much as Newport would have liked.
2
Oh, and I just finished Terms of Endearment by Larry McMurtry and loved it. Very different experience from the movie.

There's another way to read more books -- read shorter books. I know that's cheating, though. 😉 This is the best video I've seen about how to read more books. Well done.

Your suggestion about Shakespeare is great but doesn't go far enough. We should all be reading Shakespeare all the time.

Oh, and don't stress out about having your content on this channel be "more focused". Part of the fun of this, I think, is learning about how diverse you're interests are.

@8GamingMonsters I have a copy of Broom of the System but haven't read it yet. I talked with a friend of mine yesterday who swears by it, though.

@legendary3952 search engine marketing consulting, mostly, although my health has prevented me from doing much of anything lately

@joeyes4178 Lots of stuff. Search engine marketing, owned a bookstore, did some consulting...

I'm delighted to see Wendell Berry getting some love here. He's great!
