Percival was stationed in Ireland during the War of Independence there (1917-21) and he was known as a vicious and sadistic murderer. Tom Barry, whose flying columns fought Percival's forces, described him in his book as a psychopath and a coward who was responsible for the largest British surrender in history to vastly inferior Japanese forces. When Percival threatened to sue him for slander, Barry invited him to come over to Ireland and settle it at the end of a gun. His hatred of Percival lasted a lifetime and he even informed him, through his lawyers, that he'd kill him if ever saw him again.

@Ollies2CentsWardill He was responsible for numerous killings of civilians in Ireland. That is the definition of a coward and a psychopath. Being responsible for the largest surrender in British military history to forces that he vastly outnumbered also proves he was a coward. I don't know who wrote the journals about his alleged bravery in WW1 but his actual proven, witnessed record speaks for itself.

@ You're welcome. Tom Barry's book 'Guerilla Days in Ireland' is well worth a read. He was an interesting character who actually fought in the British army during WW1 (joined up at the age of 17 in 1915 and fought in the Middle East). When he returned home to West Ireland he saw the aftermath of the 1916 rebellion there and, disgusted at how the nation was treated, joined the IRA as a commander, at age 22, and ran a successful campaign in West Ireland against the British. The British were finally forced to sit down and talk in 1921 and left Southern Ireland in 1922. Many Irish veterans of WW1 took up arms against the British when the War of Independence broke out there. Believe it or not, Lawrence of Arabia (whose own parents were Irish) considered joining the IRA and even met Michael Collins a few times to discuss it, but eventually decided it wasn't for him and abandoned the idea.

@greg_4201 What's utter nonsense? I made a lot of points. I know you can't bring yourself to even consider the fact that your great, angelic heroes behaved like animals when they were stationed in Ireland, or that the man responsible for the largest surrender in British military history was a coward. But let's hear it. What's nonsense?
