Even more bizarre, why the USSR didn't declare war on Germany. They knew in advance that Germany would attack Russia.

Wulf I guess it depends on citizenship. Stalin insisted that the citizens to be returned to the USSR. They were not necessarily counted. Those who fled Russia 1917-20 were middle and upper class white Russian émigrés. Some half-Germans born in Russia were accepted into the SS right from the start. After all, mother had her husband’s Germanic surname.

I think Australians drink coffee liqueur and wine. A German discount store sells Fosters throughout Europe, hence the misunderstanding.

That is a good question. I suspect German-speaking persons had a rather lax criteria.

I guess Slavic SA/SS officers had to be 50% German regardless of last name. For NCOs and below, family background was not examined.

Of course, a person who speaks Russian and German is more helpful than someone monolingual. Salomon Altschuler, a jew from Vyborg, spoke German and Finnish. In his own words, "unfortunately, I acted as an interpreter for a German officer."

@CA-jz9bm Every tuber: monsters!! Canadian Quebec Superior Court judge: "Further, in the absence of evidence of participation or knowledge of specific war crimes, mere membership in the Galicia Division is insufficient to justify prosecution"

@CA-jz9bm Wiesenthal report revealed that not all Jews and Slavs were unarmed. Also, the USSR did not ratify Geneva Convention. Ex post facto laws are expressly forbidden by the United States Constitution. In 1942, United States Supreme Court: "...who without uniform comes secretly through the lines for the purpose of waging war by destruction of life or property, are familiar examples of belligerents who are generally deemed not to be entitled to the status of prisoners of war".

@CA-jz9bm Obviously he was right. The reality is more complex than caricatures created by Hollywood.

@CA-jz9bm As well as Django Unchained. Although I prefer European cinema, the US isn't completely isolated.Lieutenant Colonel Carl von Haartman starred in Hollywood films. During WW2, he was a liaison officer in the AOK Lappland HQ. He propably knew about Einsatzkommando Finnland and Stalag 309.
