Yeah..i'll give you that. It used to BE such a wild west in those days...but those days are gone. Mint 20 cinnamon is a solid example of what I'm talking about overall. It's not perfect, but the minor weird things you encounter are most often easily fixable.

5:38 to 5:50 Want to create a one click shortcut to a specific folder on a separate storage drive? It goes like this. right click on whatever desktop in linux you're using ( if applicable..I'm using Mint 20 cinnamon for example here), select " create a new launcher here", then in the command part of that pop up window you'll need to type the name of your file manager.... single space.... then apostrophe...then the precise full path of where that folder is So...for example i'll use my 5TB hdd where I store all my music in Linux Mint 20 cinnamon which uses Nemo as the default file manager: Thus . without quotes " nemo '/mnt/TheNameDisksAppNamedYourdrive/whatyounamedthatlinuxpc/Music' edit the middle parts as needed to be applicable to YOUR linux computer obviously remember the space between the file manager name and the apostrophe" Same thing works with local any folder you want . without quotes "nemo /home/whatyounamedthatLinuxPCtpcs/Documents" You can do the same thing with having multiple folders of different directories right on your panel by right clicking on any item you've already pinned/added to that panel, selecting " add" or " add launcher" and name the command appropriately. Just remember to ensure that pane is set to " always show" while adding new items or it does this goofy thing of making all or many of the items on it wider/fatter and you must change it from " auto hide" to " always show" and then adjust under " Panel appearance" section whichever part that got messed up by selecting it's left, center, or right zone and then the colored icon size back and forth. It's a reasonably old bug in MInt cinnamon. ( shrugs) Cheers.

You're really better off ( although timeshift is rock solid at backing up the drive in terms of at least booting back up be it kernel screw ups or other odd " i can't boot into my linux distro" what nots) using a system image backup/clone utility like clonezille or better yet Foxclone I've used foxclone to hell and back this weekend and it's saved my bacon. It's easy to use also on both Linux and Windows. If in linux or backing up linux, just ensure the drive you're backing it up ..TO...is formated to EXT4 using either gparted or Gnome Disks ( just called Disks In Linux Mint) program, then download foxclone from their site ( 660MBs I think) and use just about any linux usb thumb drive image writer to write that .iso image file to the drive ( in Mint I use "Usb Image Writer" and it works perfectly and easily every time. Boot into Foxclone desktop/distro using that thumb drive ( ** ENSURE It's usb 3.0. For some dumb reason any 2.0 thumb drive ..the process will hang on " calculating bitmap data" for literally an hour or more easily ** ) and the backup or restoration process is pretty simple and basically self explanatory. Just ensure you manually left click to select all the partitions you want to back up on the drive you're backing up from as well as to ( you'll notice chance are an "extended" partition left blank. Don't 'worry about that. It's normal ) You can back up Windows the same way overall ..just ensure the backup drive is NTFS ( I don't recall if fat32 will work or not but I know that with Windows 7 and newer versions' own System Image backup utility...it requires the drive already be formatted to NTFS for it to work) Or...You could simply just have a 2nd storage drive to put all of your programs, docs, pictures, etc into and that's one more way to guarantee that if disaster hits and whatever you did or an update did causes your linux pc not to be able to boot anymore....You can just boot into a LInux live desktop using an installation thumb drive or ssd, do a search for Timeshift with that backup drive and the drive you need restored all connected and select "Restore" button after ( if necessary) clicking "Browse" to tell it where to find the timeshift backup.
