  1. They won't give it to Trump because he made it a moral issue. Let's start from a factual baseline: the wall will have very little effect on illegal immigration. So from there it's a symbol, a wasteful one, that we're going to wall off the poor Mexicans and Central Americans, who are "rapists, murderers, and drug dealers". Trump poisoned the well for border security with explicit racism. Had he kept his mouth shut, he might have gotten a wall. Now it's a moral issue for Democrats more so than a money issue. They see Trump's intentions as racist (because he keeps opening his mouth). But had he not explicitly advertised his wall, he might not have gotten elected in the first place.
