@ericw9702 Strange how other advanced nations have government involvement in higher education and they DON'T have this student debt problem. There are many highly educated countries, but it really is just the United States that dealing with this particular problem. Why is that?

@ericw9702 Okay then. What do you think we should do to make colleges charge less money? Because it's obvious what we're doing now is not sustainable. And we are the only major country that has this problem. So what are we doing wrong? How do we solve it?
2
@ericw9702 Huh? Most professors the US don't make nearly that much. More like thr $80k like in Europe. Maybe STEM professors at flagship schools make that $130k, but certainly not most. Professors are a business expense for colleges, so they are paid based on supply and demand just like most jobs. Majors like gender studies or racial justice are chosen by just 1% of people in college. So that's not going to fix student debt either.

@ericw9702 Not sure? Really? This is the problem. Republicans CONSTANTLY complaining about solutions that Democrats come up with to actually ATTEMPT to help people. Where are YOUR ideas? Jeez. If you don't have a better idea, stop complaining. Same deal with Obamacare. If you don't have a better plan, stop complaining. No one wants to hear it.
1
@ericw9702 I agree, it's not a long term solution. But it does bring attention to the problem. Democrats have long term solutions they would like to try out, as I'm sure you already know. What ideas do Repiblicans have? Do you have any?? Or are you just against everything?
1
@ericw9702 Democrats have had majorities and haven't fixed the issue because you need 60 votes to pass most laws through the Senate. The filibuster. I'm sure you knew that. In short, Democrats haven't done anything because Republicans have been standing in the way complaining. But Republicans don't have any ideas of their own.
1
@ericw9702 Like I said, Democrats have more ideas than a bailout. But those can't be done without an act of Congress. So what are Republicans going to do to help??
1
@ericw9702 Not to people with student loan debt. And hopefully a more permanent solution will be passed before it needs to be done again. Unless Republicans block all permanent solutions.
1
@ericw9702 No. Because most people aren't just 18 years old when they get into 10s of thousands of dollars of those other types of debt. Most other types of debt require income verification BEFORE you are allowed to use them. You criticize 18-year-olds as if they have this unlimited experience with money. After they have been told their entire lives that it is worth it to take out debt so they can stay in school. Espcially people who come from lower income families with little financial knowledge.
1
@ericw9702 "Arguably" makes it worse. First, it is entirely paid for by the extra revenues from the Inflation Reduction Act. Second, it only makes it worse if we refuse to do something over the next few years to prevent it from being necessary again in the future. So what do you have in mind? You're a smart guy. What would be a better system?
1
@lanefunai4714 That's not very constructive. What makes my arguments trash? I think your comment is trash. It's easier to criticize than come up with your own ideas.
