  7.  @TheRedWaltz24  Don't get me wrong, there's definitely some beautiful reflections in it. I was referring more to to his thoughts about the causes of movement in actions done in the beginning. My thoughts are he is trying to test the limits of his knowledge and then show that Christ is ultimately above his reasoning and for that He should be praised. I'm reading the Sheed translation so it's modern but not too modern and very poetic. I like the translation philosophy. What translation did you read? I do plan on sticking with it. I'd like to get around to City of God this year too. If you love St. Augustine, you should look for a collection of his writings on love called Late Have I Loved Thee from Vintage. It has selections from Confessions, City of God, On Christian Doctrine, Enchiridion, Letters, Expositions of the Psalms, On the Trinity, Tractates on the Gospel of John, Homilies on 1st John and selected sermons. About 400 pages long. I'm more used to simpler spiritual texts like those of the Desert Fathers or longer hagiographies like those for Sts. Martin, Benedict or Cuthbert (all written by highly educated men). In Orthodoxy we have a daily reading of lives of saints called the Prologue. It has brief lives of saints, hymns of praise to the saints, reflections, contemplations and homilies for every day of the year. A two volume set that goes for about $130 that was gifted to me a couple years ago. It was written by the 20th century Saint Nikolai Velimirovic, a highly educated Serbian bishop who suffered under both the Germans and the Communists, came to America and founded a seminary. He defended Serbs during WWI and after WWII when Yugoslavia was being formed. He lived an amazing life and is considered the Serbian Chrysostom. He wrote the most beautiful poetry of the 20th century and some of the most beautiful and deepest reflections that touches the heart on theological and social topics. I'd recommend you check out his Prayers By the Lake, particularly the updated 2021 edition. Anything he wrote is worth checking out really.
