  1. Don't forget that, before these modern nation-states were gobbling up lands in Asia, Africa, and the Near East, they gobbled up their neighbors in Europe. Even if politicians cynically blame the capital for their own local mismanagement, you don't have to be a person of color to resent being ruled by distant people with a different language, history, and culture, particularly when you aren't rich. Unless the weaker economies of the EU turn around, I think we can expect growing calls for independence from various European ethnic groups. That the separation might just cause more problems than it solves will be a problem for future politicians.
