  1. I think there are two main reasons: 1. People feel like globalization, neoliberalism, and representative democracy haven't been serving them well enough. And it's hard to argue against that, considering how bad income inequality has gotten since 1980. People want something else. Some of them went to left-wing populism. And some of them went to right-wing populism. 2. Reactionary backlash to minorities gaining a lot of acceptance and influence. The first black president. White people on the cusp of not being a racial majority. Gay marriage and increasing acceptance of queer people. A wave of Christians becoming atheist or agnostic. A lot of straight Christian white people are afraid of losing their power. Someone did an analysis of the people known to be at January 6th, and it found that a disproportionate number came from counties with a sharp decline in the percentage of white people. Neo-nazism is rising because our society is doing things that Nazis hate. I think that's a good thing, but it does come with a backlash.
