Putin is the authoritarian strongman of their dreams. They're full of fear and don't want to think about solving problems. So they gravitate toward people who constantly reassure them and promise to get rid of their enemies and problems. Trump filled a similar role. Trump, Putin, Bolsonaro, Orban, Duterte - they're all similar leaders, which is why Republicans love them all.
